Frequently Asked Questions

The Mass you see here on the website is a recording. The livestream happens on our Facebook Page at 8:30am, Monday-Friday, and on Saturday Vigil, 5:00pm, and Sunday, 10:00am.

Yes. Just go to https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/

On your phone: Please accept our invitation to use the myParish app. You will find Holy Family within that app, and you can use any of the prayer resources there.

On your computer: Go to https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/daily-readings and select a date from their calendar.

Hard copies of the current missalette are being sold for $5 each (cash or check) in the Parish Office during the week and in the Religious Articles Store before and after weekend Masses.

IF I CHOOSE TO COME TO CHURCH, SHOULD I WEAR A MASK TO MASS?
We highly recommended that all adults and older children wear a mask at all times when in or near Holy Family Catholic Church.

Because small children have difficulty wearing a mask, parents should consider not bringing children under the age of two to Mass yet. Remember that the cry-room and chapel are not available for seating at this time, so people of all ages will be gathered in our one main space. Maybe the two parents could go to two different Masses, or the family could opt to follow the Bishop’s continued dispensation.

Christian love is focused on the well-being of other people. In response to a question about the commandments, Jesus says that there are two best commandments. The first one is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). The second great commandment is to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). Jesus teaches us that there is no other commandment greater than these two. The apostle St. Paul reminds us that "He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. …Love does no wrong to a neighbor….” (Romans 13:8-10).

So we are called in the current times as in all times to demonstrate our love of neighbor. We can do this by wearing a mask. Our behavior over the past 10 or so weeks has proven that wearing a cloth covering over the nose and mouth helps slow the spread of COVID-19. By modifying your normal behavior and opting to wear a facial covering during Mass at Holy Family, you demonstrate your love for fellow parishioners, clergy, extra-ordinary ministers of the Eucharist, ushers, other volunteers and staff at Mass, and visitors.

If it is difficult or too uncomfortable for you to wear a mask for about an hour, show your love of neighbor by accepting the dispensation rather than coming to Mass without a mask.

Store-bought and homemade masks as well as well-placed bandanas, gaiters, and scarves are acceptable facial coverings for Mass attendance. You will lower your own mask to receive Holy Communion. The topic of receiving Holy Communion will be taught in more detail in a future post later this week.

It will be difficult to sing while wearing a mask, so we encourage you to sing silently in your heads while listening to the cantor sing.
IF I CHOOSE TO COME TO CHURCH, AM I PERMITTED TO WEAR GLOVES?
PLEASE DO NOT WEAR GLOVES TO MASS. While wearing a mask is highly recommended, wearing gloves during Mass is not allowed. No gloves of any type will be worn by the priests, the congregants, the ministers of Communion, or the recipients of Communion.

Why not?

We need to remember that the Eucharist is a powerful sacrament. Catholics believe that the consecrated Host is really and truly the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that even the tiniest piece is the Body of Christ. If we really believe that, it is easy to understand and accept that the consecrated Host should only touch a person’s skin-- hand or tongue-- to be absorbed into us.

As believers in the Real Presence, it is now easy to see that the consecrated Host should not be placed onto fabric that collects particles and that will be washed in a washing machine where those particles will go down the drain to a sewage system.

Or, even worse, imagine the particles from the consecrated Host that have landed on plastic or disposable gloves, which will be thrown in the trash and taken away to a dirty and disgusting landfill.

Wearing gloves is a counter-sign, placing an unneeded layer of hygiene over and above our belief in the Real Presence of our Divine Physician, our Bread of Life.

Catholics attending Mass who are in good standing but who feel uncomfortable receiving Communion under the current health crisis while not wearing gloves or from a minister not wearing gloves may opt to attend Mass but not to receive Communion. They can continue to pray for Spiritual Communion. This is part of the dispensation.

Please be assured that staff and trained volunteers clean and disinfect all surfaces in the main church after each use, so there is no need to feel that you have to wear gloves during the Introduction or the Liturgy of the Word in order to protect yourself. All hymnals and missalettes have already been removed and packed away, so if you need a worship aid, you can use your own phone. We suggest finding “Holy Family PSL” on the myParish app. A description is here: http://myparishapp.com/appstore

Also note that congregants are permitted to bring in their own bottles of hand sanitizer from home. We suggest you and your family use the hand sanitizer 3 times: after arriving in church, before the reception of Holy Communion, and after leaving church.

You will not have an opportunity to greet the priests and deacons before or after Mass with a handshake for the time being. We strongly encourage you not to exchange a Sign of Peace that involves physical touch for the time being. We strongly encourage you not to hold hands during the Our Father. A future post will describe other ways interactions in the Mass will be modified temporarily.

Collection baskets will not be passed during the Offertory. For the safest conditions, please donate online. http://www.holyfamilyccpsl.com/stewardship.html If you prefer to use your envelopes or make a cash offering, please drop your donations in the black, metal, locked collection box now located at the church entrance. We will produce a separate post about the collection box later this week.

Thus, you will not really touch anything once you enter the church. Please do not bring gloves into the church.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on this message and for following the guidelines our parish has set in place. We look forward to the day when we all gather together and peacefully and freely worship in familiar and open ways.
I WANT TO COME TO MASS. WHAT DO I DO WHEN I ARRIVE?
Please remember to wear your mask during the entirety of the Mass, except to receive Communion. (https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/photos/a.2706716282946698/2706716779613315/?type=3&theater)

Please leave your gloves at home. (https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/photos/a.2706716282946698/2707743516177308/?type=3&theater)

Please sit where you are asked to sit. Expect to be escorted to your seat. When seated, there is no changing seats or saving seats. (https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/photos/a.2706716282946698/2708943852723941/?type=3&theater)

Please be reverent when receiving Holy Communion (https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/photos/a.2706716282946698/2710001445951515/?type=3&theater)

Please stringently follow all social distancing protocols.

Please graciously accept the instruction of ushers and staff.

Please refrain from using restrooms while at the church. Restrooms in the church lobby will be open during Mass for urgent and emergency use. However, parishioners should be aware that restrooms will only be cleaned and sanitized between Masses. Enter and use at your own risk. If it is necessary to use the restroom, adhere to social distancing rules. Wash hands well and use hand sanitizer.

Hymnals, worship aids and missalettes will not be available. Please download myParish app and follow “Holy Family PSL” to access the readings there. http://myparishapp.com/appstore

Passing of collection baskets will not occur during Mass. For the safest conditions, please donate online. http://www.holyfamilyccpsl.com/stewardship.html If you prefer to use your envelope or make a cash offering, please drop offerings in the locked, black metal collection boxes located at the church entrances. (See the photo.)

There will be no procession of the offertory gifts of bread and wine.

There will be no Sign of Peace and no holding hands during the Our Father.
HOW WILL I RECEIVE COMMUNION DURING THIS UNPRECENTED TIME?
Store-bought and homemade masks as well as gaiters and well-placed bandanas and scarves are acceptable facial coverings for Mass attendance. You will lower or take off your own mask to receive Holy Communion.

As you approach the minister of Communion, pay attention to your place in the line.

---When there are two people in front of you, lower your mask. (Or take it off while you are still in your pew.)

---When there is one person in front of you, bow or genuflect.

When it is your turn, we ask that you stand at the plexiglass station and receive in the hand. You will see a hole near the bottom of the plexiglass; you will insert your hands into and past the hole to the minister’s side. The minister will place the consecrated Host in your hand for you to place reverently into your mouth. The wooden base of the station is not a kneeler. Please do not kneel on it. It is there to balance the structure. Also, children should not stand on it. For a photo of the station, please see https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/photos/a.2706716282946698/2710001445951515/?type=3&theater

While wearing a mask is highly recommended, wearing gloves during Mass is not allowed. We covered this topic in depth in our second post, and if you missed it, you should read it here: https://www.facebook.com/HolyFamilyCCPSLFL/photos/a.2706716282946698/2707743516177308/?type=3&theater Please do not wear or bring gloves into the church.

Catholics attending Mass who are in good standing but who feel uncomfortable receiving Communion while not wearing gloves (or from a minister not wearing gloves) may opt not to receive Communion. This is part of the dispensation.

Likewise, communicants who prefer to receive on the tongue and will not receive in the hand are asked to consider continuing Spiritual Communion.

Please be assured that priests and deacons and other Extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will continue using hand sanitizer before and after distributing the Body of Christ. For another layer of protection, we invite you to bring your own hand sanitizer from home and use it 3 times: upon entering the church, before the reception of Holy Communion, and after leaving church.

A total of five social distancing practices will be in place for the reception of Holy Communion: masks, hand sanitizer, plexiglass, and receiving in the hand. The fifth social distancing protocol will be practiced while you are standing in line: please keep six feet of empty space between Communicants at all times.
SHOULD I COME TO MASS, OR IS IT BETTER FOR ME TO STAY HOME AND WATCH THE LIVESTREAM?
Staff and trained volunteers will sanitize the church between every Mass. Even so, parishioners who are at higher risk for severe illness should consider not attending Mass and continue to participate in live-streaming and radio broadcasting of Mass. Please consult with your doctor or the CDC website to determine your risk level.

If you have traveled out of the country in the last 30 days, have a fever, shortness of breath and/or at least two of these symptoms – chills, headache, coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, muscle pain, loss of smell/taste – please do not attend on-site Mass. Watching the livestream Mass is a good option for you at this time.

If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, please do not attend on-site Mass. Watching the livestream Mass is a good option for you right now.
